The thing that's frustrating to me, as a 23y/o maker, is that so much of the good radio equipment is expensive and proprietary and not open to being hacked. Like, the san francisco amateur radio club has a repeater up on Sutro Tower which is set up with SystemFusion. And SystemFusion is so stupidly proprietary that nobody really even makes a decoder for, like, RTL-SDR, much less an encoder for the format.
Which you can't do anyway, because the voice codec is patented and proprietary, so you couldn't do voice. I could hook up data to my computer through my kenwood tm-v71a's data port and try transmitting and receiving digital modes, except i would only be able to use open codecs like Codec2, for which there is no community and no repeaters. So i get analog, which is boring, especially because i'm not interested in talking to the local repeater community about what old fucks died. And even after i squared away the data connection to the radio, got the input and output signals working, i'd still have to completely duplicate the analog audio front-end, because i can't access the speaker and mic on the radio from the data port. My other option is to build my own radio. But part of the reason the mainstream radios are so good is that they do the hard part, all the RF bullshit that's sensitive and hard to get right, for you, with a very high degree of quality. And even if i built my own radio, supporting my own digital modes, there's NO interoperability unless someone else builds their own radio too!
