System is an HP desktop Compaq 6820s, which came with Vista business (where all works, though the Vista bugs.!). It has a built-in ethernet connector plus wireless. Ubuntu 7.10 installed without too many problems.
However, there seems no way to get the system to use the eth0 interface (which goes to a Zyxel 4-port wired-only router. I've set up the routing in different ways, checked that it knows the default 192.168.1.1 gateway, gone through all sorts of utilities, but nothing seems to use the eth0 interface (which I have put down and up): instead, any outgoing packets all go onto the local loopback. The router sees the physical connection as live, but gets no response when I try to ping the HP from it. The wireless connection would (I think) work if I had a wireless router, since it does see the neighbour's wireless router (unavailable to me since I showed him how to protect it!). Any good ideas? Nice to see a reply (it is always a small comfort to see that one is not alone in having problems!).
Fingerprint Capture Software Download. I tried the ethtool, with the same result. I have not (yet) tried this addrconf (do I understand that it is a c program to be downloaded, compiled and run?). I have got access to a wireless network, which works (and will work even better when I find how to get the dns setup). This, of course, runs on eth1, and only seems to work if I put in a static ethernet address (and the gateway): why DHCP does not work. The reference to downloading a driver is a good idea, but I have no idea what driver I should try to download (the HP web site for drivers seems to think that every HP portable runs Windows). Thanks for trying to help.
On the pure dns problem, ubuntu works differently from classical unix/linux: there is no /etc/resolv.conf file: rather, there are graphical interface commands to do all of this. On the wireless interface (eth0) the route command gives what you say (other than that you meant 192.168.1.1, not 192.168.2.1.
The setting is such that I can happily get to places by IP address, but getting a dns server set up is so far a no-no (I tried setting the DNS server as 192.168.1.1, also as If I try the ethernet eth0 interface, I get nowhere: packets go out onto the loopback interface, even though the route table is exactly what you expect. Not very productive!
